Besieged by blue butterflies

Published by ghostseer at 12:14 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Today, I wandered back to that pool in the wildest corner of the nature reserve, looked to the far side of the still, deep water, certain I would see her. But she was not there. I waited a long time. Still she did not come. I stood so still that a butterfly, a beautiful blue butterfly, settled upon me. Then another, identical to the first, then another and another. Soon the air was filled with blue butterflies. I saw they were hatching from tiny cocoons suspended from the branches of a commonplace bush next to me. They swarmed thicker and thicker about me, covering me until the sensation was stifling rather than beautiful. I tried to struggle free of them, ran. They fluttered after me, covering me all the way home. I climbed in the shower and it was only by making the water scolding hot that I could get them off me. Soon the water sloshing around my feet was thick with the poor dead butterlies and I felt a shudder of horror at my crime. Amid that shudder, I saw that faraway woman’s stare, sharp of focus in my mind’s eye.
